Introduction to Raster Graphics and Photoshop

  • Raster Graphics: Images composed of pixels, each with a defined color. Common formats include JPEG, PNG, and GIF.
  • Photoshop: A powerful raster graphics editor used for photo editing, digital art, and graphic design.

Session 1: Getting Started with Photoshop

  1. Opening Photoshop and Creating a New Document
    • Launch Photoshop by clicking the icon or searching for it.
    • To create a new document, go to File > New.
      • Dimensions: Set the width and height (e.g., 1920×1080 pixels).
      • Resolution: Standard for web is 72 dpi, for print is 300 dpi.
      • Color Mode: RGB for digital, CMYK for print.
  2. Photoshop Interface Overview
    • Menu Bar: Contains dropdown menus (File, Edit, Image, etc.).
    • Tools Panel: Located on the left, contains tools for editing.
    • Options Bar: Displays options for the currently selected tool.
    • Panels: Located on the right, includes Layers, Color, Properties, etc.
    • Workspace: Can be customized via Window > Workspace.

Session 2: Basic Tools and Operations

  1. Navigating the Workspace
    • Zoom Tool: Shortcut Z, click to zoom in/out.
    • Hand Tool: Shortcut H, click and drag to move around the canvas.
  2. Basic Tools
    • Move Tool: Shortcut V, move selected layers or selections.
    • Marquee Tools: Rectangular (M) and Elliptical, create selections.
    • Lasso Tools: Freeform (L), Polygonal, Magnetic, create custom selections.
    • Quick Selection Tool: Shortcut W, select areas based on color and texture.
    • Magic Wand Tool: Shortcut W, select areas with similar colors.

Session 3: Working with Layers

  1. Introduction to Layers
    • Layers are like stacked sheets of transparent paper.
    • Create new layers via Layer > New > Layer or the Layers panel.
  2. Basic Layer Operations
    • Select a layer by clicking on it in the Layers panel.
    • Move layers with the Move Tool.
    • Adjust layer opacity in the Layers panel.
    • Change blending modes (e.g., Multiply, Screen) for effects.
    • Lock layers to prevent changes.
    • Group layers by selecting multiple layers and pressing Ctrl+G.

Session 4: Editing and Retouching Photos

  1. Cropping and Resizing Images
    • Crop Tool: Shortcut C, click and drag to crop the image.
    • Image Size: Go to Image > Image Size to adjust dimensions.
    • Canvas Size: Go to Image > Canvas Size to change the canvas area.
  2. Basic Photo Adjustments
    • Brightness/Contrast: Go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast.
    • Levels: Adjust shadows, midtones, and highlights via Image > Adjustments > Levels.
    • Color Balance: Adjust color tones via Image > Adjustments > Color Balance.
  3. Retouching Tools
    • Clone Stamp Tool: Shortcut S, copy parts of an image.
    • Healing Brush Tool: Shortcut J, fix imperfections.
    • Spot Healing Brush Tool: Shortcut J, quickly remove blemishes.
    • Patch Tool: Shortcut J, repair larger areas.

Session 5: Adding Text and Shapes

  1. Text Tool
    • Text Tool: Shortcut T, click to add text.
    • Formatting: Use the Options bar to change font, size, color.
    • Text appears on its own layer in the Layers panel.
  2. Shape Tools
    • Rectangle, Ellipse, Line Tools: Create basic shapes.
    • Custom Shape Tool: Choose from a variety of shapes.
    • Shapes have their own layer and can be edited in the Properties panel.

Session 6: Applying Filters and Effects

  1. Using Filters
    • Access filters via Filter > Filter Gallery.
    • Common filters: Blur (Gaussian Blur), Sharpen (Unsharp Mask), Noise (Add Noise).
  2. Layer Styles and Effects
    • Layer Styles: Access via Layer > Layer Style or double-click the layer.
    • Common effects: Drop Shadow, Bevel and Emboss, Stroke.

Session 7: Saving and Exporting

  1. Saving Your Work
    • Save your project as a PSD to keep layers and settings (File > Save As).
  2. Exporting Images
    • Use File > Export > Export As for various formats.
    • Use File > Export > Save for Web for web-optimized images.
    • Choose formats: JPEG for photos, PNG for transparency, TIFF for high quality.
